THE female driver in a fatal hit-and-run accident surrendered to the authorities on Thursday, a day after her car hit a man and his six-year-old son at Buri Road in Barangay Mandalagan, Bacolod City.

Police Officer 2 Richard Dema-ala, traffic investigator of Police Station 3, identified the driver as Kathryn Rhea Yanson, 37, of Escalante City, Negros Occidental.

Dema-ala said Yanson was accompanied by her husband when she surfaced at the police station around 10:20 a.m. Thursday, June 21.

Dema-ala said Yanson sent surrender feelers to him on the day of the accident but the latter only decided to yield the following day because of fear.

The traffic investigator said Yanson felt nervous after the accident that prompted her to hide for a while.

Dema-ala said Yanson, even with her surrender, will not be placed under police custody as the 12-hour reglementary period had already lapsed.

The victims' family is also not willing to pursue any charges against the driver after they both agreed to an initial settlement.

Dema-ala said Yanson assured the victims' family she will provide financial and burial assistance.

The driver refused to be interviewed.

On June 20, Dante Lascunia, 44, and his son Randel, 6, both residents of Purok Carmencita, in the said village, were about to cross the road on board a pedicab when a speeding Kia Rio hatchback driven by Yanson overtook another vehicle and collided with them.

Both victims just came from their house to get bananas which they will sell.

Yanson was traced after she left the car at her sister's house at Barangay Estefania.
