Dubya hints Gloria will get US support

MANILA -- In what amounted to endorsing her 2004 reelection bid, US President George W. Bush took pains in praising President Arroyo during a brief joint public appearance as the two met at Malacañang.

"I want to remind the people of this country what a great leader you've been when it comes to fighting terror. You've been strong and stalwart, and that's what's needed," he said. "We want to continue to help you."

Aside from security measures, Bush also expressed confidence that the coming elections in the Philippines would show its deep commitment to democracy.

He said the country should continue showing that democracy is strong and powerful in effecting positive changes.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the world needs the Philippines to continue as light to all of Asia and beyond, there is so much to be proud and to be prouder of the beloved country, your commitment to democracy and peace, the US and RP have proud history we have the strongest ties two nations can share, and we stand together," he ended.

Political groups were expecting the endorsement Bush for Arroyo in the 2004 elections.

Senate President Franklin Drilon said "President Bush has restated his promise to the government that he would continue supporting and fighting for democracy of the people." (Sunnex Luzon)
