Sector reps light candles for peace

HUNDREDS of representatives from different sectors last Saturday met and lighted candles for peace in celebration of International Women's Day.

Main convenor Manggawang Kababaihang Mithi ay Paglaya (Makalaya) chairperson Sylvia Torres said their twin activities were part of their response to the worsening peace and order situation in Mindanao.

She said this is also their way of condemning the bombings in Mindanao, the impending war in Iraq and the Balikatan 2003 US-RP Military Exercises among others.

"We are also hoping that our cry that those who are in the peace talk panels should come from Mindanao not from those in Luzon and Visayas," she said.

Torres said it is those from Mindanao who knows and sympathizes the sentiments of the Moro rebels.

She added that it is the women and youth sectors who are most affected of this ongoing conflict the government has with the rebels.

She expressed apprehensions that if the war in Iraq will erupt it will spill over to the Philippines, increasing poverty and oppression particularly on these already marginalized sectors.

Their symposium was entitled "A leaders symposium on women, governance and political participation" with a theme: "Selebrasyon sa kababaihan isinggit ang kaangayan alang sa tinu-od nga kalambuan ug kalinaw" or (Celebration of Women Shouting for Justice and Genuine Development and Peace).

It was held at the Provincial Capitol Farmhouse with leaders and members from the Citizens' Action Party (Akbayan), Alliance for Progressive Lapor (APL), Nestl‚ Philippines Inc. Workers Cagayan de Oro Factory.

Also there were the representatives of the Postal Employees of the Union of the Philippines (Peup), Transportation Federation of Cagayan de Oro (Trafeco) and Labor Education and Research Network (Learn) among others. LJA
