Costanilla: Lito Lapid to topbill Bahug-bahug tableau
By Sam Costanilla

REENACTMENT. This year’s reenactment of the bloody encounter between local hero Lapu-Lapu and Portuguese invader Ferdinand Magellan is sure to attract domestic and foreign tourists. The April 27 reenactment on the shores of Mactan island will be this year’s most colorful and exciting cultural event to be seen in this part of the globe. Director Daisy Baad is getting no less than Pampanga Gov. Lito Lapid and Ilocos Norte Cong. Imee Marcos as Lapu-Lapu and his wife Bulakna, respectively. I heard character actor Ruel Vernal is playing Magellan. Other popular stars as well as local artists are also getting juicy roles in this reenactment which is a yearly project of the Lapu-Lapu city government. The local government unit is right in commissioning Baad to meg this presentation, considering her expertise and professionalism as a director, unlike some self-styled directors whose works, however they try, have never impressed the audience.

MUSICAL. But prior to the April 27 reenactment is a six-night staging of the musical Kadaogan sa Maktan written and directed by Cebu’s stage master Allan Jayme Rabaya. He has composed more than 10 original songs for this production which will be staged for three consecutive nights (April 20-23) at the stage near the Lapu-Lapu monument and another three consecutive nights (April 24-26) at SM City Cebu’s Theater One. Rabaya told me singer Mon Villanueva is playing Lapu-Lapu and negotiations are going on for former provincial board member George Aznar to play Magellan. Rajee Palanca will play Datu Umindig aside from being the musical’s costume and production designer. By the way, University of San Carlos professor Aida Jumao-as is translating some English speaking lines to Spanish from Rabaya’s script.

CO-PRODUCER. My good friend Marlon Garcia Wafer, producer of the musical Cinderella, has explained that due to some minor problems caused by his co-producer, the 1 p.m. staging of the play last March 1 at Teatro Casino didn’t push through. According to Wafer, his co-producer didn’t do his job while he still had enough time, neglecting such important items as the booking of lapel microphones and recording of the minus-one accompaniment. Director Brett Aleonar was right in not staging the 1 p.m. show because there was no more time to hear the finished recorded material before its actual use. I am not exactly saying the co-producer is an irresponsible guy, but he should have done his job weeks before the first playdate and seen to it that everything was in place days before the actual staging. That’s how the professionals do it.

DEEJAY. This veteran disc jockey, who is currently jobless, is busy visiting local radio stations, talking to their managers and hoping to be taken in as a deejay but it seems they are not interested in getting him anymore. (For reactions/feedback, call or text 0916-3483333).
