Sun.Star crushes CDN; Bombo, GMA win
By Patrick C. Costelo

SUN.STAR Cebu rose up the ranks after nabbing its second straight win after an opening-day loss when it ripped the undermanned Cebu Daily News, 49-36, in the first match-up of yesterday’s Newsmen Basketball Association of Cebu (NBAC) encounters at the Hipodromo Sports Center.

Meanwhile, GMA-7/Balitang Bisdak and Bombo Radyo/ABC-21-Unisports maintained their rule at the top spots of the elimination round with unscathed 3-0 cards after staggering past respective opponents in the ensuing games.

GMA survived ABS-CBN’s relentless fourth-quarter attack by a stingy point, 54-53, with Godfrey Rellen’s undergoal basket in the final ticks of the game as Bombo Radyo rushed for a fourth-canto comeback to hand Freeman a nail-biting 66-64 loss in the day’s final game.

Efren Lonzon led Sun.Star with 12 points in the low-scoring first game, which saw both squads struggle on offense in the opening minutes.

But as the second frame ticked on, Sun.Star started to take control with a five-point halftime lead at 20-15 and extended its lead in the third at 37-23 with Jun Migallen leading the onslaught and the rest of the team drilling their numbers.

The fourth quarter saw Sun.Star toy with the drained CDN Siloys, who only had five players, as Joseph Tubilan and Alex Badayos strut their stuff in the endgame without bothering to score to keep their team’s double-digit lead.

ABS-CBN, on the other hand, was behind by 14 points in the third canto before giving GMA 7 a scare in the final period to pose a strong comeback. But GMA 7 regained control after cashing in on several breaks in the final stretch.

Rellen racked up 20 points to lead GMA 7 to its third straight win, while Jun Solon and Jun Veleganio made 16 and 14, respectively.

In the chilling final salvo, The Freeman led at 64-59 with only a minute left when Bombo Radyo scored five quick points with Rudy Quimod’s jumper and a trey by Rey Gealon to force a 64-all deadlock.

Manny Villaruel made a crucial miss on The Freeman’s next possession while Quimod drained a jumper on the other end as the buzzer sounded, saving the day for Bombo Radyo.
