Exporters to US, Europe must get HACCP by yearend

FOOD exporters to Europe and United States should apply for Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification before January 2004.

The government strictly requires the HACCP, and if these exporters do not comply, they would be banned from conducting business in Europe and the United States, said Erwin Espiron, management systems auditor of TUV Product Service Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. Philippine Branch.

During the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) seminar at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel last week, Espiron described HACCP as the most effective method of maximizing food product safety.

He said it is a cost-effective system, which targets resources to critical areas of handling and processing. Through this, the risk of producing and selling unsafe products would be reduced.

Espiron assured that exporters of processed foods and meat products would benefit from the adoption of HACCP because it is a recognized and effective method that will give customers confidence in the safety of their operations. And it will indicate that the establishment is a professional company that takes its responsibilities seriously.

Espiron also discussed the application for ISO 9001:2000 for the food and drink sector.

ISO 9001:2000 is a certification that calls for new requirements like customer satisfaction and continual improvement of the company, he said.

Espiron recommended that after food establishments get the HACCP, an application for ISO certification should also be accomplished.

“When a company is ISO certified, it indicates that it can compete globally and that quality is guaranteed,” he said.

In the Philippines, there are already some 1,000 ISO certified companies from different sectors. AEL
