Wickedly zany ‘Blind Curves,’ stageplay runs from Aug. 4-28 By SAM COSTANILLA SPOTLIGHT
STAGEPLAY. Two wacky sisters from Pasil, a myopic cowboy who can’t shoot straight with his pistol and an actor-poet who thinks he’s the Boholano hero Francisco Dagohoy, are all geared up to entertain the Cebuanos with their zany escapades in a ramshackle cabin in a desolate California desert. The four of them will be seen in a stageplay titled Blind Curves: Los Desperados. It will be mounted by Bantawan Sugbo from Aug. 4 to 28. Playtime starts at 7:30 p.m.
Bantawan Sugbo is located on 91 Visitacion st. this city. Rhea Marie Fantonial and Jamna Gicole are the sisters Minda and Mindy, respectively; Bong Cabrera is Adolfos Cristos, the Dagohoy pretender, while writer-director Crispin Ramos plays Billy James, the ambitious cowboy. The entire presentation promises to be wickedly funny so don’t miss this one.

COMMENDABLE. I dropped by Bantawan Sugbo last week to watch Our Town, another stageplay participated in by our very own homegrown talents. The place, although not yet air-conditioned, is always full every time a play is staged there. When I was there, I noticed that the audience, all of them coming from the student sector, was so attentive to the presentation despite the heat. I’d like to believe that the young are learning to appreciate the beauty of stageplays as well as the thrill and fun that they offer. It is commendable on the part of Bantawan Sugbo to continue catering to stageplays even in these trying times. Local writers, directors and talents are given the opportunity to hone their skills through these presentations and Bantawan Sugbo plays a major role in this respect. Ramos, its US-based founder, makes it a point to come to Cebu every year just to mount at least one stageplay. By the way, I was informed that tickets for the Blind Curves: Los Desperados presentation are selling like hotcakes but only a few are left for sale. A ticket is less than P50. Isn’t that affordable?

ENTRIES. Songwriters here and abroad may now submit their entries for next year’s Cebu Popular Music Festival, a yearly project of the Cebu Arts Foundation, Inc. (Cafi). The annual event goes onstage every third Friday of January as part of the Sinulog week celebration. The entries may be love or novelty compositions. Entry forms are now available at the Mutya studio. One may call 231-0133 or 35 for more details.

NOTORIOUS. This radio commentator, who is notorious for pocketing “for the boys” money, can no longer see eye-to-eye with his colleagues. After all, he is aware that they know that a non-Cebuano legislator who was in town recently gave him a hefty amount for distribution to his fellow broadcasters who attended the politician’s mini-presscon.
