Rodriguez terrorizes 6-footers
CEBU Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. 2002 season Rookie of the Year Jayford Rodriguez sowed terror as he led John O in ripping the Samsung quintet following a one-sided 101-71 win in the first day of the 2nd Bert Lina Cup Six Footers basketball league at the Cebu Coliseum yesterday.
The Youth for Roco quintet also showed what they got in preying on the hapless Timex with an equally lopsided 97-69 win in the second match. While the Talk ‘N Text- Purefoods game was still being played at press time.
Except for some awkward moves and frequent miscues – the 6-foot-anda-above tournament went smoothly as expected with Rodriguez leading the way for players who someday could represent the Philippines in the National Basketball Association.
The University of the Visayas players-laden John O team engaged in a torrid exchange of fire in the opening quarter with Samsung, which had Jonathan Canceran and Cassidy Shun leading the way.
However, the University of Cebu Webmasters-represented Samsung slowly deteriorated under the constant pounding starting with John O’s 23-14 scoring in the third.
Samsung tried to get back on track in the third but John O was too cohesive and even dropped an endgame 29-13 blitz that put the game away for good.
Rodriguez scored 41 points while prospects Eulogio Lasala Jr. and Alexander Regis Jr. contributed 17 and 15 points, respectively.
Canceran topped Samsung with 17 points, Shun added 14 and Franco Angelo Cipriano contributed 12.
Meanwhile, Miguel Angelo Pacheco, Jori Dale Perez, Alfredo Gerilla Jr. and Joseph Amabag led the balanced offensive attack and brilliant defense of Youth 4 Roco which beat Timex.
With only Jeffrey Morilles and Olsen Terence making huge contributions for the Camilo Go-coached Timex team, the Roland Remedio-mentored Youth 4 Roco frolicked after a 24-16 breakaway in the first quarter and never looked back to pocket the victory.
Today, John O will test the cohesiveness of the Youth 4 Roco, following the game between Timex and Purefoods that will start at 5 p.m. The main game will have Samsung playing Talk N’ Text.
