Company heads launch CSR Expo set July 4-6

Top officials of the country’s biggest corporations and heads of corporate foundations gathered last June 10 to recognize the central role the private sector plays in alleviating the plight of the poor and the need to initiate changes one step at a time.

The event at the Filipinas Heritage Library in Makati city kicks off the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Expo 2005 set on July 4-6 at the Westin Philippine Plaza. It is organized by the League of Corporate Foundations (LCF).

To sustain their commitment to carrying out their CSR, top officials acknowledged the need to integrate this into their business operations to sustain their contributions to communities.

“We call on business to take the paradigm shift, to make corporate responsibility part and parcel of a business’ way of life, and extend help not only by giving but also by ensuring that there are efforts to sustain this help,” said Marilou Erni, executive director of Petron Foundation, who also chairs the three-day CSR Expo 2005. She said the CSR Expo uses the symbol stepping stones to dramatize that these changes will have to be taken one step at a time.

At the launching were Atty. Rodolfo Salalima, vice-president for corporate affairs and regulations of Globe Telecoms; Miguel Jose T. Navarette, group director for business of Manila Water Company; Aniceto Sobrepeña, executive vice-president of the Metrobank Group and executive director of the Metrobank Foundation; Roberto Calingo, LCF president and executive director of Mirant Foundation; and Erni, among others.

From CSR Week to CSR Expo

The LCF, a network of over 50 corporate foundations and corporations engaged in social development work in the country, has been commemorating CSR Week in the Philippines for the past six years. The CSR Week has grown into an Expo beginning 2003. This year’s theme, “Beyond Giving,” offers a fresh look at CSR as more than philanthropy.

“The achievement of our corporate goals and the need to contribute to societal well-being are inescapably linked,” said Calingo.

The three-day event in July boasts of a dynamic line-up of respected CSR practitioners and business leaders from here and abroad, including Louis Willem “Tex” Gunning, the president of Unilever Best Foods Asia, and Jude Mannion, founder and CEO of New Zealand’s Robin Hood Foundation, which has elevated CSR into a “must-have” for business.

Mirant Philippines is the strategic partner for the CSR Expo 2005, with the Ayala Group, Petron Corp., Shell companies in the Philippines, and Metrobank Foundation as major partners.
