BMX in Olympics; Cebu may host event in Seag By Jade S. Violeta Sun.Star Staff Reporter
BMX will share the spotlight with other cycling disciplines following its inclusion in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and plans of the Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines (PhilCycling) to have it as a demonstration sport in the upcoming 23rd Southeast Asian Games (Seag).
The UCI, cycling’s world body, recently included BMX in the Beijing calendar. The event will be raced on a dirt track similar to a motocross track and not a free style competition as in the X-Games.
The PhilCycling board has named Montecristo Mendigoria to head the BMX commission, one of several commissions in the federation, the others being road, track and mountainbike.
Cebu host
If plans push through, the BMX event in the Seag may be held in Cebu, which will also host the mountainbike and roadbike events on Nov. 7 to Dec. 5.
The Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PhilSoc) recently gave its go signal for Cebu to host the two bike competitions.
With this development, Cebu will now play host to nine events with the inclusion of the cycling races to sepak takraw, pencak silat, taekwondo, karatedo, judo and dancesport.
Cebu Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (CebuSoc) chairman Jonathan Guardo said he is very grateful to PhilSoc for choosing Cebu to host the cycling events.
“I commend Boying Rodriguez for doggedly pursuing these events,” said Guardo of the Danao City councilor, who is also an international mountainbike commissar.
Venues
“Mountainbike was listed in our bid but we only got the confirmation now.”
The mountainbike and road-bike races will be in Danao City, while dancesport and judo will be staged at the Waterfront Hotel Lahug, taekwondo at the Cebu Coliseum, sepak takraw at the University of San Carlos, and pencak silat and karatedo at the Mandaue Coliseum.
Danao has been the main hub for various local, national and international biking competitions, including the recent 2004 Southeast Asian Games Mountainbike Challenge.
Guardo said Danao is the best place to hold the Seag mountainbike event with its reputation in organizing quality bike races.
“Boying is a veteran at organizing bike events. With ample international mountainbike experience, Danao is definitely the right place for the Seag bike races,” said Guardo.
