Caguioa leads race for MVP honors By Frank C. Calapre Sun.Star Correspondent
MANILA – The most coveted Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors of the PBA Fiesta Conference is a three-cornered fight among Mark Caguioa, his teammate Eric Menk and Willie Miller.
After the elimination round of the on-going conference, Barangay Ginebra’s Caguioa gained the lead in the MVP race with a total 1,882.9 statistical points, but just a few steps behind is Menk.
Menk, who captured the Player of the Conference award as well as the Finals MVP of the last two conferences, garnered a total of 1,824.8 points before the Gin Kings were showed the exit door in the wildcard phase.
Advantage
Miller of the Phone Pals accumulated 1,764.6 for third, but the former Red Bull off guard has the advantage because Talk N’ Text is still battling in the finals against San Miguel Beer.
Miller, the 2002 MVP, is closing in on Menk and Caguioa after the Phone Pals advanced into the Fiesta Conference Finals.
Also figuring in the contest is Phone Pal Jimmy Alapag, who has 1,577.9 points, while Rodney Santos of Ginebra landed fifth with 1,517.2.
The choice of the PBA Rookie of the Year honor is a close contest between James Yap of Purefoods and Shell’s Richie Alvarez.
No way
If the selection is to be done objectively, there is no way Yap can steal the plum from Alvarez as the Shell power forward pulled away from Yap in the statistical points at the end of the semifinal round.
Alvarez currently has a huge 184.8-point margin over Yap with 1,183.8 points to Yap’s 953.1.
However, the statistical points represent 30 percent of the voting. Another 30 percent will come from media votes, another 30 percent from the players votes and 10 from the committee composed of ABC-5, the Philippine Sportswriters Associations (PSA) and Sports Communicators of the Philippines (Scoop).
