Pacquiao’s P33M lawsuit v. Murad settled out of court

Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao can finally heave a sigh of relief – a big one.

Pacquiao’s P33 million lawsuit against his promoter, Murad Muhammad, ended without even going to the jury yesterday after both camps settled off the court for an undisclosed amount.

The turn of events, which came earlier than expected, now emancipates Pacquiao from Muhammad’s so-called “air-tight” contract, making him a free agent.

As part of the settlement, Muhammad has also reportedly agreed to cover Pacquiao’s court fees and dismiss a lawsuit he filed against Pacquiao’s handlers earlier.

“This is a triumph for all of boxing,” Pacquiao was quoted by Philboxing.com. “Win or lose, I said to myself, I had to fight for what is right and what is mine.

“Thank God we won and now I can concentrate only on boxing. There is truly justice in this world,” added Pacquiao, who immediately left New York, where the trial took place, and flew back to California with his wife, Jinkee, along with friends who supported him during his legal battles.

In a post-settlement statement, a relieved and happy Pacquiao thanked God, his family, his lawyers and the crusaders of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act, which was forged primarily to protect boxers from devious managers and promoters. The Act, which was staunchly supported by Sen. John McCain, also enforced full disclosure of business deals.

“Everybody is happy. Murad Muhammad settled with Manny and gave him back his freedom. He also settled for an undisclosed amount to cover court fees,” said Pacquiao’s lead lawyer, Judd Burstein.
