Suico earns another shot at OPBF crown
AFTER relinquishing his super-featherweight belt, Randy Suico will fight for another Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) title, when he takes on Thai fighter Pongpetch Chuwatana on May 27 in Lapu-Lapu City.
“The card is in place but the venue is not yet final. It’s either at the Waterfront or at the Lapu-Lapu City Sports Complex,” said boxing promoter Rex “Wakee” Salud.
Salud is currently negotiating with the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel management and the Lapu-Lapu City Government.
Suico, who is currently rated WBC No.10 and OPBF No.1, will vie for the title that will be vacated by Japanese champion Chikashi Inada, as the Japanese will challenge for the WBC lightweight Interim title on May 20 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Chuwatana, on the other hand, is rated OPBF No.8 and will need all the skills he has to beat the hard-punching Suico.
The Mandaue City-native Suico got the No.1 spot of the 135-pound division as the regional champion in the super-featherweight class, where he made five successful defenses of his title, all won by knockout.
If Suico will be successful in his bid to win the OPBF 135 belt, he will also be included in the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios mega card in Manila on July 2, against a Mexican counterpart, which will also be his first acid test since leaving the lighter super-featherweight division.
Suico is protecting 24-2 win-loss card with 21 wins by knockout. RCM
