Heroes and Beauty Queens By Maria Carla Bren Vianney L. Yap
SOUNDS like an all too familiar catch phrase for Jose Rizals-in-the-making. But half-British, half-Filipino Carl Johnbert Alviola is no hero. At least, not yet. As far as being a seven-year-old kid is concerned, championing Home Radio’s Search for Little Mr. Cebu 2006 last month is already a feat worthy of a heroes’ praise. After failing to reap the title last year, he boldly stepped up to the ranks of this year’s batch of cuddly, naturally charming, and über-cute aspirants, and slammed his way to glory. Now that’s two straight victories for Carl, who also joined and won Mr. Fiesta Mall. The star in him shone through as he coolly breezed through the walkway in his summer wear and formal suit, to the delight of the judges and the spectator-fans who were in awe of his absolute composure. A pat on the back, too, for Mom Carla Alviola, who trained her son not to be nervous and to be himself always.
While the crowd at Elizabeth Mall was momentarily swept away by the swirl of orange, yellow, white, red, blue, and pink colors onstage and while the parents’ nerves were wracking like crazy, the kids seem to have a mighty good time bouncing and prancing around the stage as if they were just playing – which prompted the host Rudynah Entera to say in a rather nostalgic note, “I wish I were a kid again.”
Speaking of grace under intense pressure, a different story blooms out of Little Ms. Cebu 2006 winner Sarah Gilbolingo. Guided by her personal mantra, “Maintain your good posture and your smile, and always keep going,” Sarah is no amateur when it comes to beauty contests. If her mom Amy Gilbolingo were to say it, “I believe in her capabilities because since she was a child, she already showed potential.” At eleven, she has been into contests like Little Miss Philippines, where she aced her way up to the regional level. She is into modeling and ballet and has won in several other contests such as Super Mandaue and Cool Babe. As if those aren’t enough to leave her breathless, she looks at the future full of dreams.
“I want to become a doctor but I also want to be a fashion model, and if ever, I would like to be a beauty queen.”
Looks like our stars are up to a lot of things already. But armed with good character and personality, even with all the craze over reality television shows that promise a new breed of young stars, Carl and Sarah are sure stand-outs not only in that four-sided box (called television) in the living room but also in the up-and-down journey called life.
