IN monitoring the Phil-ippines blogging com-munity, one site that I regularly monitor is Ratified.org. This site ranks the Philippines’ top 100 blogs using metrics, such as Technorati links, Google PageRank and number of Feedburner subscribers.
From its recent results, one blog that caught my attention is Sustines Laplana (http://www. selaplana.com), who currently ranks number two in Ratified. He is based in Maasin, Southern Leyte.
This proves that bloggers, regardless of where they are in the country, can make a name for themselves online. Laplana is certainly an inspiration to any blogger in the country as you don’t have to be based in big cities to excel in blogging and earn substantial income online.
With Paypal.com services available in the Philippines, there are many revenue generating programs that bloggers can join to earn online.
Experimenting with Facebook through Ning. Last Tuesday, I conducted a workshop on Web 2.0. One of the things I shared is how to use port application in the famous Facebook.com social networking website.
One of the fastest way to try it out is to create a community in Ning.com. Once you have built your community, there is a “manage” link there that you could use to further customize your Ning social network. One option you’ll find is to promote your community in Facebook.
Three options are available. These are video streaming, music streaming and photo slideshow. I encourage you to try it out and experiment with how you can maximize the site.
Software Coding. Yesterday, I was conducting a lecture on software coding.
What inspired me to do that workshop was my experience in creating coding standards, which can be a very difficult task. Companies that are considering this should look at various aspects such as indentation and spacing in code writing at the minimum.
Another aspect to check out is naming convention for variables, functions, types, name- spaces, macros and source files, among others.
Documenting procedures is important for companies that are pursuing alignment of process in the areas of Capability Maturity Model Integration or other standards. In writing about software development policies and procedures, developing coding standards requires recognition and agreement from programmers that such is needed.
They can also be encouraged to share their common practices and agree on it.
In doing this, you’ll discover also who among your programmers are open to ideas and those who would rather use the methods that they are already used to. It is in this stage as well that you’ll get to decide who among your programmers can stick around and grow with you.
Advance Christmas Shopping. Last year, I spent my Christmas shopping mostly online. Now I’m being asked by friends if I’ll do it again next year and which ones will I buy from. I guess I’ll stick with my favorites.
