Defeated PB bet named as special projects head

MANDAUE City Mayor Jonas Cortes may soon appoint Edmund Sanchez as head of the City’s special projects.

Sanchez ran for a seat in the Cebu Provincial Board against Wenceslao Gakit as part of the mayor’s ticket in the last elections, but lost.

According to Section 94 (b) of the Local Government Code of 1991, “except for losing candidates in barangay elections, no candidates who lost in any election shall, within one year after such election be appointed to any office….”

City Administrator Briccio Boholst said they are still discussing Sanchez’s fate, but the City will definitely accommodate him.

Sanchez will officially start his role as adviser to the mayor tomorrow.

Cost cutting

Since last year, he has been helping the mayor come up with cost-cutting measures, specifically on gasoline and power consumption.

He was also part of Cortes’ negotiating team with the opposition-dominated City Council.

Sanchez has been picking city personnel to become a member of his A1 Management Team.

The team has been conducting studies and finding ways to cut cost and make effective a particular project in serving basic needs.

The team is also responsible for slashing the proposed P22-million Burgos Bridge project.

Like the City’s council of elders that submits its recommendations to the mayor, Sanchez said his team also submits its recommendations to the mayor.

The chief executive still has final say, though, he said.

Sanchez added that he has not been paid for his services. (OCP)
