Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Another crucial step for The Dream
ANOTHER difficult task is at hand for Z “The Dream” Gorres’ road for another shot at a world title because he will be facing a tough opponent in Nick “Kanyankole” Otieno, the Universal Boxing Organization champion.
If Gorres (27-2-2, 15 KO’s) will be beaten by Otieno (15-1, 5 KO’s) or display a poor performance on May 31, at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino, he might lose the opportunity for a crack at the victor of the International Boxing Federation super flyweight showdown between Dimitri “The Baby” Kirilov and Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan for the title on August.
“Gorres can’t afford to lose or have a mediocre performance in this fight,” said Michael Aldeguer, ALA Promotions president, in a press conference at Big Mao restaurant yesterday.
“This will be a stepping stone fight for him to fight for a championship in the future,” he added.
Otieno is still virtually unknown because the team of Gorres hasn’t seen a single fight of his.
Confidence
But Gorres is confident that the style of the Kenyan doesn’t matter because he believes that he has trained hard and has the edge by experience.
“I have no idea of his style but I have trained hard. I did everything and I’m very much prepared. I have the advantage in experience,” told the 26 year-old ALA boy.
“I guarantee that in my next fight I will give the people a better performance,” said the IBF Inter-Continental super flyweight titleholder.
Gorres was asked which round he would knock down his opponent, he replied “I’ll not predict the round but I’ll try to finish the fight early.”
After a layoff from boxing for more than a year, Malcolm “Eagle Eye” Tuñacao (21-2-3, 14 KO’s) will be in a comeback fight against Tanzania Professional Boxing champion Rashid Ally (11-9-7, 2 KO’s) in a 10 rounder.
Edito “Ala” Villamor has been supervising Tuñacao’s training at the ALA Gym for his return bout and believes that he is very focused and dedicated in his training for the fight at hand.
“He is very focused in his training. He really wants to be a world champion again. Malcolm is back,” said Villor, the chief trainer of ALA Gym.
Talent
Tuñacao was a former World Boxing Council flyweight titlist after defeating Medgoen Singsurat via seventh round TKO in 2000 and was a former member of the Philippine team.
Meanwhile, young talent Jason Pagara (13-1, 7 KO’s) will debut as an ALA boy as he trades fists with Heri Andriyanto (11-3-1, 7 KO’s) for the vacant World Boxing Organization Youth lightweight crown.
Pagara is the youngest member of the ALA gym at 16 and is also the youngest to ever fight for the WBO Youth title. (EKA)
