Sally Mae vows to win in coming matches

CEBU’s junior tennis sensation Sally Mae Siso came out empty-handed in her last competition last week—her weakest performance by far, and promises a complete turnaround this week.

“It was a bad week for me and I promise to do better this time,” said Siso, who is a member of the RP Under-14 girls team. In an unlikely event, Siso, who has had a streaking run the entire summer with local and international competitions, lost in the finals of the Girls 14 and 16 in the Head Penn Tennis Championships last week at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts.

True to her promise, Siso started out strong in the Juntaphil Metro Age Group Tennis competition, as she moved to the second round of the Girls 14 and 16 classes, following emphatic wins yesterday in Rizal.

Siso of the University of San Carlos South Campus blanked Genevieve Alava, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round of the Girls 14 division and later defeated fellow Cebuana Jessica Lagman, 6-0, 6-2 in the Girls 16.

Meanwhile, her older brother Bernardine Niño, is riding on the momentum of his double victory last week and sailed through his second round assignment against Nestor Poche in an easy 6-0, 6-0 win. Niño, a gold medal winner in the Palarong Pambansa held in Palawan last month, won two titles in the Head Penn competition last week. (MCB)
