Cesafi earmarks P1 million for new season

FOR a league that claims to have no budget in its coffers, the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) earmarks a whooping P1 million in order for the league to be up and running.

The budget, which will cover the operational expenses of the main event of basketball, the other sporting events and the cultural and academic competitions, was proposed and approved by the board members of the city’s premier inter-school and multi-event league during the board meeting the other day.

“The expenses that will be incurred for this season is somewhat close to P1 million. This will be for the entire operation of all the sporting and academic and cultural events,” said commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy.

Tiukinhoy added that the amount will cover the cost of the rental for the venues and fees for the officials.

“This amount will be compensated for and not one event will be sacrificed because the budget will come from the registration fees of each school,” said Tiukinhoy, who added that the gate sales from basketball, which is the only income-generating event of the Cesafi, will also be used for this season.

In another development, the board also gave Tiukinhoy and two Cesafi member-schools the approval in joining the Asian University Basketball Competition (AUBC).

Tiukinhoy was offered the commissionership of the AUBC and he accepted, while seven-time Cesafi champions University of the Visayas and National Schools Basketball Championship winners Southwestern University were allowed to take part in the competition that will be participated by varsities from neighboring Asian countries.

Meanwhile, the board of directors also approved the appointment of deputy commissioners Rico Navarro and Danny Duran and the new rules regarding the stricter implementation of the drug testing, neatness and rules against bench-clearing.

Random drug testing will be done and anyone found positive for illegal substances will be banned for life. Those, who figure in a brawl will get a season-long suspension instead of one or two-game penalties, while stylish hairs like Mohawks or dyed hair will not be allowed in the tournament.
