DCCCII is best chamber but award goes to Cebu

THE Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII), which made remarkable achievements in 2006, was voted as the Best Chamber of the country.

This was bared by DCCCII president Bienvenido Cariaga, saying that PCCI chair Miguel Varela informed him during their brief meeting in a hotel lobby in Manila two months ago.

He said however that it was not awarded to DCCCII because of the chamber's decision to disaffiliate from PCCI in October.

He said because of the disaffiliation, the award was then given to the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Cariaga said DCCCII really had several achievements to be proud of.

First, he said is its strong and persistent advocacy with the National Government through President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on funding the construction of transmission lines by the National Transmission Corporation (TransCo), which had been restored giving way to the ongoing construction of transmission lines from Maramag down to Bunawan in preparation for the anticipated power crisis come 2007.

The project, he said, is ongoing and in fact the facilities of the Davao Light and Power Company in Bunawan is already completed and ready to source out power from the new TL that will facilitate the distribution of more power to the region.

The other project is the P5 million grants that will fund the training for out-of-school youth and the P1 million fund of Senator Francis Pangilinan and the P26 million grant with the Australian government for human development.

"These are remarkable achievements that other chambers in the Philippines do not have," he said.

As far as the Australian grant is concerned, he said, the DCCCII is the only private institution that was included from among other government institutions.

He said some 86 businessmen have been trained through the program and the course covers different fields such as advocacy, good agricultural practices, good manufacturing practices, management of chambers, and others.

On the other hand, Cariaga also said that in coordination with the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board (RTWPB), the chamber conducted advocacy on how to make business more productive.

He said thru Istiv or Industries Systematic Time Conscious and Innovative strong Value of work they were able to reach out to a hundred major companies.

He said with Istiv, the companies became cost effective and became more productive and more perks were given to workers.
