RP's ICT aims to corner 5% of $13B world market

INFORMATION and communication technology (ICT) players in the Philippines are working to get at least a five percent share in the $13 billion market of the industry worldwide.

Oscar Sanez, chief executive officer of the Business Process Outsourcing Association of the Philippines (BPOA), said this during his presentation at the 6th Mindanao ICT Congress and 1st BIMP-Eaga ICT Congress held at NCCC Mall in Davao City Wednesday.

Sanez challenged Mindanao players to work double time since most of the business process outsourcing is concentrated in Manila and Cebu.

He said 90 percent of the BPOs are at the National Capital Region and the Visayas.

But Mindanao, he said, can benefit a lot because it is highly competitive in terms of labor cost.

The property cost here is also an advantage, which is much lower than Makati.

The industry, he said, currently employs some 250,000 workers and in three and a half years, it would need one million more.

He also said the players must continue to work on the business environment as well as development of new sites.
