Dad disputes claims DIA is world's 'most modern'
By Grace L. Plata

DAVAO City Councilor Peter Laviña rebuffed the statement of an Australian engineer saying the Davao Airport is "the most modern" and the "safest" in the world.

"Thanks, but no thanks!" Laviña said in an e-mailed letter to Sun.Star, adding "this fallacy should not get into the head of Dabawenyos because it is not true."

Post your comments on the explosion at the Glorietta 2 mall in Makati City.

According to Laviña, that was a personal opinion of Australian William Krelle who is here for the BIMP-Eaga Senior Ministers Meeting and the Davao Trade Expo 2007. Kreller was one of the foreign engineering consultants who helped build the Davao International Airport in 1995.

Lavina, having flown to many airports in Asia, North and South America, and Europe, said the Davao airport is a good one but definitely not the best or the safest in the world.

Author of the Davao (Bangoy) International Airport Safety Ordinance of 2007, Laviña said if the Australian's claim was true then there would not have been a need to pass this ordinance.

He said airline and tourism industry publications and trade associations worldwide have consistently named the airports at Hong Kong and Singapore as among the "best" in the world.

"It is not good to boast of something that is not true," Laviña said.
