Friday, April 18, 2008 DCWD to study on surface water viability
EVEN before the controversy involving the P100 million loan that Davao City Water District (DCWD) will undertake for its Comprehensive Mainline Replacement Program could be settled, the water district is embarking on another project which may spark a new set of controversy.
The city's water district is now deeply considering the possibility of tapping surface water as an alternative for ground water.
In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, DCWD general manager Rodora Gamboa said what they have right now are two conflicting studies: one says that there is still enough water that may last for the next 70 years while another study shows that the city is over-extracting what may be its most valuable resource.
However, Gamboa clarified the proposal to tap surface water as an alternative to ground water is still being studied right now.
"We have yet to conduct a feasibility study on the project, if it is viable or what," he said.
The study on the feasibility of surface water as an alternative, just in case the city's ground water run dries, is only the water district's preparation for any eventuality.
If the study by DCWD will show that there is a need to resort to surface water, the water district eyed the Tamugan area as a possible site. (CPM)
