Friday, April 18, 2008 Laviña backs workers' demand for pay increase
DAVAO City Councilor Peter Laviña expressed support to the demands for wage adjustment, saying it is only fair for workers to seek for pay increase following the rise in prices of basic goods and services.
"The wage adjustment can be done via legislation, wage boards or collective bargaining," Laviña said Thursday.
Whatever means, he said, the amount should be within the levels demanded by workers, which ranged from P60 to P125 daily increase.
Laviña also supports other measures to help the plight of workers in the private and public sector.
Last week, he sponsored a resolution asking Congress to immediately act on the pending bills exempting minimum wage earners from payment of income taxes.
Laviña, chair of the City Council committee on appointment and government reorganization, said he also supports the efforts of Davao City Hall Employees Association (Dachea) to receive their unpaid Cost of Living Allowances (Cola).
He said the recent 10 percent increase in government workers' pay announced by the national government should also apply to local governments. (GLP)
