People's caravans converge in Oro for Earth Day
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE People's Caravan from Southern Mindanao arrives in Cagayan de Oro City Friday for the culmination activity of the Earth Day celebration.

The caravan came from Davao City. It will be joined by four other caravans from Northern Mindanao, Central Mindanao, the Caraga, and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm).

In an interview Thursday, Ricardo Calderon, regional executive director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), said the contingent from Southern Mindanao will join the convergence of all five regional contingents of the Earth Day People's Caravan.

"This is a strategy for a nationwide information and education campaign on the importance of preserving nature," he said.

The caravan is a nationwide campaign. In Mindanao, caravans from every region will converge in Cagayan de Oro City Friday.

Last Wednesday, DENR-Southern Mindanao spearheaded the Earth Day People's Caravan in Davao City. An estimated 500 participants from various sectors joined in the said activity.

The activity was held at the People's Park with representatives from the academe, business sector, local government units, national agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
