Mining firm sets up tailings facility

THE Apex Mining Corporation has put up the first ever tailings management facility in the municipality of Maco in Compostela Valley.

It is designed to minimize environment damage despite the fact that Mindanao is teeming with mining operations for decades.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

The country's first High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) lined tailings dam structure with a fully grouted foundation and abutments.

The facility is a demonstration of the Apex Mining Corporation commitment to apply world's best environmental practice in their mining operations.

EDCOP, the pioneer engineering consulting firm in the country and was constructed by Sta. Clara International Corporation, designed the tailings dam.

Manila-based Infratex Philippines Incorporated supplied and installed the HDPE liner using the highest quality environmental containment liner.

It was manufactured by the world’s largest and leading manufacturer of HDPE lining systems - GSE Lining Technology, a certified ISO 9002 and 14001 accredited manufacturer.

The HDPE liner specified and used was 1.5mm double-sided, textured GSE HDPE geomembrane liner and GSE Polylock for liner concrete attachment at the base and abutments.

Infratex's liner installation team applied GSE’s strict global Quality Assurance standards and methodology in installation.

Comprehensive HDPE weld seam testing was performed in accordance with GSE global installation Quality Assurance and Quality Control Standards. (CPM with Press release)
