Thursday, July 24, 2008 City gets P1.5M for market rehab
THE Iloilo City Government through Mayor Jerry Treñas signed Wednesday a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Metrobank Foundation, Iloilo Economic Development Foundation, and Taytay sang Kauswagan, Incorporated for the rehabilitation of the Jaro big market in Barangay Desamparados, Jaro.
The city has received P1.5 million from Metrobank Foundation, to be used for the repair of the said market.
The Iloilo Economic Development Foundation and the Taytay sang Kauswagan, Incorporated will also allocate P2 million to provide microfinance to the vendors of the Jaro big market.
According to Treñas, the aid from the said groups is a very big help for the repair of the destroyed market's infrastructure.
It will also be helping the market vendors.
The Jaro big market suffered damages during the recent devastation of Typhoon Frank (international codename: Fengshen) and the flood.
The City Government earlier organized a cleaning and clearing operation in the Jaro market but its roof especially in the meat and fish section was highly deteriorated and needs to be repaired.
The three groups, on the other hand, are also thankful in joining with the City Government for the rehabilitation of the area.
According to their representatives, the effort will make a difference on the lives of the vendors, some of whom temporarily sell their goods at the back of the Jaro Cathedral due to the present situation of the Jaro big market.
Repair has already begun with ground development and application of new paint. (EC)
