Thursday, July 24, 2008 Water district's P2.5M line destroyed
THE strong current of river water brought about by heavy rains last July 21 ravaged again the recently completed P2.5 million repair of the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) line in Barangay Amerang, Cabatuan.
The MIWD, a water utility which supplies water to Sta. Barbara, Pavia, Oton, San Miguel, Cabatuan, and the whole of Iloilo City, was about to start the "normal" water distribution when the water line was destroyed anew.
MIWD OIC Manager Ernesto Caberoy confirmed the damage Wednesday, saying a team has immediately started to survey the damage.
According to him, the damage will surely be repaired but he could not give a time frame for the second round of repair yet since the survey was not yet done.
Water rationing from fire trucks will be done again in the affected barangays.
Last month, Typhoon Frank (international codename: Fengshen) destroyed MIWD's transmission line, specifically the 600mm in diameter raw waterline and 90-meter pipe support (pier and steel trusses) in Barangay Amerang.
It cut the mainline and lowered the district's production capacity to about 70 percent.
The flashflood that occurred during the typhoon also scoured portions of the intake structure of the MIWD dam in Barangay Daja, Maasin. (JDB)
