Bello named Cabinet secretary

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo appointed former justice secretary and solicitor general Silvestre Bello III as the new secretary to the Cabinet.

Bello replaced Ricardo Saludo who was earlier named as chairman of the Civil Service Commission (CSC).

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said Bello, who at present is the presidential adviser on new government centers, would assume his new assignment once Saludo is confirmed by the Commission on Appointments (CA).

Bunye declined to say who would succeed Bello as head of the Office of the Presidential Adviser for New Government Centers (OPANGC), a post he held since July 2007.

Prior to the OPANGC, Bello was the general manager and chief executive officer of the Philippine Reclamation Authority from January-December 2006 and the president and chief executive officer of the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC)-Development and Management Corporation.

He also served as the chairman of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) panel for the peace talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) from 2001-2004.

He was the justice secretary and later as solicitor general under the Ramos administration.

The announcement of Bello's new assignment follows the appointment of Bunye to the Monetary Board, which he would assume on July 3, and the earlier announcement of the President of an impending revamp in the Cabinet. (JMR/Sunnex)
