Gov’t belittles clergy’s support to Lozada (7:45 p.m.)
MANILA -- Malacañang said judging from the crowd that gathered during last Friday’s interfaith rally in Makati, the Arroyo administration has nothing to worry about.
Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Sergio Antonio Apostol issued the statement following the declaration of Rodolfo Lozada Jr., the key witness in the Senate hearing on the questionable national broadband network (NBN), at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) that church leaders have assured him that they would support him until the end.
Apostol said Lozada’s supporters among the clergy are already identified and there are only a few of them.
“There is nothing to worry especially after the interfaith rally last Friday. I think that’s the most number of people they can gather,” he said.
Rally organizers claimed that their number reached 70,000 to 75,000 but the police said the crowd at the interfaith rally reached only 15,000 at its peak.
Apostol said the rally organizers should be careful with future mass actions because they might be used by politicians with personal interests.
Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said the disparity on the crowd estimates showed that the so-called search for truth should never be based on opinion. (JMR/Sunnex) |
