Kampi, Lakas eye 3-stage process leading to merger (5:38 p.m.)
THE Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) on Wednesday proposed a three-stage process leading to a merger or grand coalition with the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) prior to the 2010 national elections.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno, who is also the Kampi chairman, said this three-stage process will involve drawing up a common platform of government for the two parties, studying possible ways of formalizing the unity of Lakas and Kampi, and ironing out kinks in their structural organization at both the national and local levels.
Puno said this would require the organization of 1) a platform committee that will discuss a platform of government common to both parties; 2) a legal study group that will examine possible ways of formalizing the unity of the two parties, either through a full merger, a coalition or any other form of association; and 3) a structural organization committee that will attempt to bridge and resolve disputes between the two parties especially at the local level.
"We need to work this out before 2010 so we can emerge as a very strong, unified force in the coming national elections," Puno said. "My suggestion is that we should get the committees organized before the close of the session of Congress and come out with initial reports within 90 days," he said. (Press release) |
