Troops disarm motorcycle bomb in Maguindanao

DAVAO CITY -- An improvised explosive device (IED) rigged in a motorcycle and believed to be bound for Davao City was intercepted by the authorities in Maguindanao province.

Lieutenant Colonel Roseler Murillo, commander of the Army's 64th IB, said his men conducted checkpoints at the vicinity of barangays Saniag and Kauran in Ampatuan town Tuesday afternoon after receiving intelligence report of an alleged motorcycle bomb that was assembled in Mamasapano.

The motorcycle, however, was not intercepted at the checkpoints, but was instead found abandoned at Barangay Kauran around 5 p.m.

The bomb was said to be on its way to Davao City when the motorcycle had a flat tire at Barangay Kauran.

The explosive ordnance division of the military and police diffused the IED around 10 p.m.

Major Armand Rico, spokesman of the Eastern Mindanao Command, said the intelligence report identified a Davao-based terrorist by the name of Abdullah as the one who assembled the motorcycle bomb.

Abdullah is said to be affiliated with the international terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah.

He said the IED is composed of TNT placed inside the air cleaner of the motorcycle which is connected to a mobile phone that serves as the triggering device. The bomb was later defused.

The bomb, if it exploded, would have caused damage up to a 15-meter radius. (BOT/Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
