Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Dost's first integrated client-centered info system launched
THE Department of Science and Technology (Dost) has a new pet called Tacis.
It is Dost's first integrated client-centered information system. The Commission on Information and Communication Technology's (CICT) e-Government Fund was the one who funded its development.
Tacis is a product of the creativity and commitment of the men and women from Advanced Science and Technology Institute, Dost's 6 research and development institutes, and 15 regional offices, which, as a team, spent a good part of the last three years putting together an information system that would bring Dost's testing, analysis, and calibration services closer to clients.
Scientific testing services are a critical part of Dost's mission whose RDIs and regional offices perform about 21,000 testing and calibration services annually for clients nationwide mainly SMEs.
These services are valued at an average of P29 million a year covering the metals, food processing, chemical and industrial products, nuclear energy, textile, wood, furniture, construction, and pulp and paper sectors.
Scientific testing services are at the heart of today's global economy.
It is impossible for an exporter to penetrate the world market without meeting very strict international product standards. Even domestic market players can no longer expect businesses to thrive unless they comply with accepted standards.
Reliable laboratory tests are the best way to do this.
Dost is committed to provide its clients with reliable and very convenient testing services through Tacis. We want to make life easier for clients by giving them access to information anytime, anywhere.
With Tacis, they can submit requests for services online, get quotation on the service requested, monitor transaction status, and get a copy of test certificate.
Automation allows our testing laboratories and financial staff to process service requests faster, reducing processing time for test requests by 30 percent, data analysis by 50 percent, and report preparation and release by 35 percent.
Because of faster processing time, Dost can take in more requests and earn additional income which we project to be as much as P9.3 million annually.
Tacis also makes it a lot easier for management to monitor the operations of Dost's testing laboratories.
Monitoring the laboratories is important because it is a way to understand how critical testing laboratories are and monitor survival and growth of many SMEs.
Dost encourages its clients to take full advantage of Tacis along those in the business sector. (Press release)
